With only one collection under its belt, and now after seeing number 2, Fall 09, it is starting to settle in that Julian Louie is here to make a mark. Having worked with Fransisco Costa at Calvin Klien and Tara Subkoff on Imitation of Christ, Julian is no amateur to the fashion industry. His structural designs however are majorly a reflection of his architecture studies at Cooper union prior to switching to fashion. Julian Louie’s paneling, color palettes, and hardware are very much inspired from modern architecture. There is also a very nice element of contrast throughout the collection, with the juxtaposition of hyper construction of sharp and defined lines and more playful pleated silhouettes.
French Luxury brand, Akillis seems to take some inspiration from James Bond. Its appeal is sexy, luxurious, dangerous and eccentric and the collection is presented as if it were Bond’s next mission. Bullets were a large part of this collection, with two pieces that stood out to me more than anything else; the diamond bullet nipple ring and the thigh cuffs made up of diamond covered bullets are out of this world! ~ The 26 year-old designer, Caroline Gaspard, was not being modest when she fabricated her customer with Kalashnikov price tags starting at 7000 euro and moving upward towards 11,000 euro.
Telepathe recently released their debut album ‘Dance Mother’ on I Am Sound Records. It is produced by David Sitek, of Tv on the Radio, and it perfectly captures the sound they set forth with last years single “Chrome’s On It”. Avante garde, atmospheric beats and airy vocals make for a record that’s at different times haunting, pretty, and futuristic. “In Your Line” and “Can’t Stand It” are two of the albums stand-outs, but “Michael” is the hero for me. Dark and morbid lyrics like “My greatest joy would be to destroy you” and “I want to wish you suffer violently” contrast wonderfully with the song’s blissful beat.

Somehow this video slipped through my radar when it was release last year but catching up some local Venice skater boys last week, it came up. When fashion and skate meet it couldn’t look better than this. So take minute to watch this super rad video Adam Kimmel collaborated on with friend and photographer/filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos for his SS09 presentation. The concept so refreshing! Skater Stuntmen Noah Sakamoto and Patrick Rizzo are dressed in Kimmel’s baby-blue suits while bombing down the highway at around 60 mph. Madness!
Permanent Vacation is a young Swedish collective tapping into their youth culture through fashion, design, photography, styling and music. This is a little editorial story of their SS09 collection which encompasses the leisurely vibe of being on “permanent vacation”. You can definitely feel the minimalistic Swedish aesthetic, which is continuing to influence designers all over the world.
