Just a little peek into the full review of Milan menswear f/w 2010 fashion week. I was feeling the set design for the presentation of the Byblos collection. Found objects worked really well as a backdrop to the grungy warrior aesthetic of the collection. Great job on the layering and beautiful knits and boots. A+ on set design. READ MORE

It comes as no surprise that Alexandre Herchcovitch drew the spotlight for Fall/Winter 2010 Sao Paulo Fashion Week, where he presented his mens and womenswear collections. What baffles me though, is how one mind can produce such contrasting thoughts simultaneously.

Herchcovitch’s womenswear was beaming with cultural references of nomadic/gypsy lifestyles juxtaposed against a royal divinity of a Cleopatric power and beauty. While his menswear presentation had a much darker influence, perhaps drawn from a universal celebration best known from its Mexican roots, “Dia de los Muertes”. The face painting was a direct reference of that for me, and looking into it a bit more deeply I can hypothesize that the color palette came from there as well, though his hues did take on a deeper, darker temperament. It’s no wonder why when I first heard ‘When They Fight, They Fight’ by the Generationals I was perplexed as to what “generation” they were from.  I was amazed to find that this duo made up of guitarists/songwriters, Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer was in fact not from the 50’s or the 60’s as I expected but rather a modern ensemble. With a sound that very much resembles that of ‘the oldies’, this hit, off their album Con Law (released July 2009), takes you back to the Motown. The pop lyrics tell a story that is about fighting with the one you love, and loving the one you fight unconditionally.  I must say, I’m a sucker for a good love song but this one deserves definite praise. The New Orleans based Joyner and Widmer take us back to a time when music was all about having soul and telling your love story and they do it with a sense of fluency.
