The Swedish indie-pop band that got their name from a gas-station-turned-radio-repair-shop called “Radioavdelningen” (The Radio Dept.) has until recently been somewhat under the radar. The band was formed back in 1995 but since then has undergone quite a bit of transformation and at times even haitus with band members coming and going. Originally founded by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson, in 1998 Duncanson began making music with Martin Larsson and in 2001 they were joined by Lisa Carlberg (bass), Per Blomgren (drums), and Daniel Tjäder (keyboard). After several years of reassembling and reworking, the group has finally found some solid ground, signing with Labrador Records, one of Swedens respected indie record labels and putting together some pretty impressive tracks.
‘Heaven’s On Fire’ off their new album Clinging To The Scheme (Scheduled to be released online in March 2010), puts you in a happy daze with its melodic dreamy overtone and catchy keyboard riff. The constantly changing instrumentation brings out the groups unique multi-dimensional sound and shines light on their versatility as a whole. I look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Since I just finished talking about Mathew Ames, it seemed appropriate to add a source of his inspiration, that truly that has withstood all tests of time. Images from, “Irving Penn Regards the Work of Issey Miyake”, a book which was published more than a decade ago, displaying the wordless harmony of the artistic relationship between Irving Penn and Issey Miyake.

Florence and the Machine is the recording name of Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Florence Welch’s distinctive voice intertwines beautifully with harps, strings and drums as she sings her inimitable ‘soul inspired indie’ and ‘Tim Burton-style fairytales’. Her new albums features so much brilliant stuff its hard to imagine and this is one of the gems featured on there. So sit back, relax and prepare to be blown away into the cosmos.

Often when bombarded with images and ideas I look to one of my recent favorite designers, Mathew Ames. I thought of him his morning and realized I had not seen his SS 2010 lookbook campaign, so I decided to take a break from the chaos and enter into some purity. Entering his world is comparable to meditation, a non-reflexive playground where everything just makes perfect sense. A simplicity that is so difficult to attain, can rarely be associated with young designers as Ames, but its like draping is his first language.
