First International Multimedia Exhibition on Jean Paul Gaultier Rocks the Museum World (First Montreal then Dallas, and San Francisco). Organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and beginning June 17, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Side Walk to the Catwalk will reveal how Gaultier’s renowned multicultural, gender-bending aesthetic has succeeded in capturing the mood of the times. Marking the 35th anniversary of the designer’s own label, the multimedia exhibition features roughly 120 brash and bold haute couture (80%) and ready-to-wear garments and accessories for men and women spanning from 1976 to 2010.
Original, never-before-seen photographs by leading contemporary artists and photographers including Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Pierre & Gilles, and David LaChapelle will further bring to light Gaultier’s eclectic, multidisciplinary scope of inspiration and extraordinary creative vision.
His legendary collaborations with today’s leading pop/rock stars, filmmakers, and choreographer will also be revealed through excerpts and film stills from music videos, concerts, runway shows, dance performances, and TV shows.
Stage outfits worn by Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Kylie Minogue, and costumes for films (Pedro Almodóvar’s Bad Education), original sketches for film costumes for Peter Greenaway (The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover), and Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) are but some of the many eye-popping ensembles on view that will illustrate Gaultier’s special connections with the worlds of art, music, film, and dance.
Please note that a mammoth, 400-plus page exhibition catalogue will features exclusive interviews conducted with JPG’s colleagues and friends including Madonna, Pedro Almodóvar, Kylie Minogue, Carla Bruni Sarkozy, Catherine Deneuve, Tom Ford, Inès de la Fressange, Carine Roitfeld, Boy George, Juliette Binoche, Martin Margiela, Marion Cotillard, Helen Mirren, Polly Mellen, Dita Von Teese, Rossy de Palma, and Victoria Abril, among others.
After its initial presentation at the MMFA (June 17 to October 2, 2011) in Montreal, Canada, the exhibition will travel to Dallas Museum of Art (November 13, 2011 to February 12, 2012) and de Young Museum, San Francisco (March 24 to August 19, 2012) .
