The Drums: Down by the Water
drums

The Drums are a new band out of Brooklyn that blend a massively likable, not to mention danceable, sound of gloomy 80s pop, 90s indie-pop and 50s surf-rock. ‘Down by the Water’ is one of their more slow and romantic tracks, but I fell in love with its beautiful simplicity. Listen to ‘Down by the Water’ off their album Summertime below.

Thom Yorke: Hearing Damage
new-moon-soundtrack

This new Thom Yorke song is off the New Moon soundtrack. The movie was actually quite good if you like action and vampires and lust (oh my). ‘Hearing Damage’ plays in my favorite scene of the film. A sequence where Victoria (a vicious vampire) chases Bella, as Bella chases Edward, and the werewolf chases Victoria, and finally Bella jumps off a cliff in a moment of surrender. Its all very dramatic. And the song is tense and titillating. Perfect for a little vampire chase scene.

Beyonce featuring Kanye West: Ego

beyonce-ego

Ok. I know it ain’t cool to like Kanye these days. And I’m sure you’ve heard about this chick Beyonce before. But all the same, I cant get this one out of my head. This little diddy does it for me. Kanye should really stick to the music, cuz he sucks at everything else. And Beyonce is gold. Cant deny. Good job, Jay, you got a good woman. But watch out…cuz she got a big (ahem) ego. Check out the video if you haven’t seen it already.

Your Twenties is a band from London that blend a curious mix of upbeat, keys-driven alt pop and west coast-styled rock fusion. The frontman of the band is former member of Metronomy but broke away and started Your Twenties on his own. Listen to ‘Folks Back Home’ of the album Caught Wheel below.

Gray Kid: Lonely Love

gray kid
The first time I saw the Gray Kid perform many years ago on Valentine’s Day at Spaceland in Silverlake, CA, I fell in love. His one-man-band, wacky beats and off tempo dance moves come together in a high-energy and mesmerizing performance. Whether he’s rapping over old MOP songs or singing one of his original sultry melodies, Gray Kid kills it every time.

Julee Cruise: Falling

6a00cd970e4cda4cd500d414410442685e-500pi

If you’re a David Lynch fan, you may know Julee Cruise from her musical appearances in Blue Velvet and most famously, in Twin Peaks. Still, her music goes unnoticed to most. I came across her album several years ago separately from Lynch’s introduction, but have revisited in in light of Halloween as I’ve been watching the Twin Peaks series. It reminded me of my love for her dreamy, retro sound. Her album Floating Into the Night was released in 1989, but it remains in the melancholy-music hall of fame. Listen to Twin Peaks theme, Falling below.
