Next Coke Packaging Concept by Andrew Kim

Industrial design student Andrew Kim created this very cool concept of  some square Coke Bottles. Not a stupid idea for the iconic bottle, since you gain in space for the shipping and for the recycling. Let see if Coke will like it…

Thanks to the Dieline for the tip !

    1. Very cool. Great green thinking too.
    2. Aside from the problems others have mentioned, it can really only be comfortably used from one side with the offset opening.
    3. The collapsible feature is very imaginative, and needs to be picked up by Coke or another company.

while coke probably won’t accept this right off, it could be used for more. Milk, water, juice, etc.

The idiot who mentioned the Fiji water bottle fails to realize that water is not a carbonized liquid. Square containers are extremely inefficient at holding pressurized liquid hence the round bottles we have today.

Using the Fiji water bottle as an example, if you leave some water in the bottle and allow it to sit for a day, the sides will expand and bulge out. The same would be observed with a carbonized liquid except probably 20x that effect, not to mention the possibly the cap may fly off.

Society we live in today usually has a very good reason for things. Keeping the cap from flying off is the whole reason Coca-Cola spent money patenting the design of their bottles.

Apart from all the other satements Re: carbonation etc..I also think it would probably slip straight out of your hand and it would most likely be uncomfotable to hold for any length of time. That all being said ,I think it’s a really beautiful design and greatly pleasing to the eye.
    just not practical.

The only problem I can see with this is that there are some places (Like where I live) where the recycling depots don’t accept caps, so I’m going to have a collapsible bottle which won’t stay collapsed.

    Cool concepts,
We have seen bottles similar to this in Japan and in Japan they are very intense about recycling so this is a pretty good thing. Good work!

This is an AMAZING idea, it could really help us reduce wasting.

  • Sarah deWolf

I think this is a great concept…I would happily choose these bottles 100% of the time ! If some people wanted the classic bottle style perhaps those could be done in glass only….just for nostalgia.

that’s a great and genius way to design coke products

It is interesting that no one has stated, that if you are concerned about the implications of Coca Cola’s plastic bottles then you should stop buying Coke products. Common sense is as follows:

problem=I am concerned about the environment, specifically the wastefulness of the products I consume.

The answer is not to reconfigure the way in which I consume. The solution to the problem is to question as to why I am consuming the product. Coke is in no way essential to sustaining the human body.
Drinking carbonated beverages is a luxury not a necessity.

Just because you are able to package Coke more efficiently, it does not logically follow that you should do so.

The big question is how vendible it is. No matter how cool the bottle is, if it jams up the current vending machines, coke probably wont make a full switch.

I like the design. It’s a sleek modern looking type, and I just eat those up. It’s true, however, that the old design does hold a traditional place in our hearts. Someone mentioned an issue with cup holders in our cars. That would be an issue as well. The collapsible idea is brilliant. Especially for when you don’t have a trash can nearby and don’t want it taking up a lot of space.

Nice ones. So what would Pepsi do?

  • Alanna

I really like this design and it’s obvious that lots of thought was put into it. I’d love to see it on shelves.

Coke is really invested in their traditional curvaceous bottle shape though which makes it stand out on the shelf- although subltely. If this bottle went into effect, yeah it would stand out but I’m sure pepsi would be quick to catch on.

  • This guy is an idiot

Why do industrial designers think they can just reinvent things? Just because you can make pretty drawings on a mac doesn’t mean you can try to be an engineer. I can’t tell you how many “revolutionary” designs I have seen that won’t work because the idiot designer has no concept of even basic physics or engineering.

Did this idiot stop to think “Hey maybe Coke bottles are round for a reason?” Does a square bottle hold pressure well?

  • Sophia

    Dear everyone,
This person wasn’t presenting an idea to Coke.
They weren’t saying this should happen with Coke.
They were drawing up an idea for a bottle that LOOKS COOL and IN THEORY WOULD WORK. Not a real design!
Who are you to be so rude to this designer who is trying to save the poor dying Earth? Yes, a 14 year old girl just told you to watch your mouth. Be nice!
I’m sure you’ve had ideas before that weren’t perfect, but that doesn’t mean people ridiculed them like this, you kindergarteners. My goodness, CALM DOWN.
    Sincerely, Sophie

  • Riku Xander

    @Sophia

In theory a square bottle would work? No, in theory a square bottle would break from the pressure.

As for your comment about ridiculing the idea, I believe you’re taking a discussion which criticizes some of the design flaws as ridicule. And the few people who were actually making purposefully disrespectful comments about the design are not as smart as they would like to believe.

    Sincerely,

    Riku Xander

I like the idea (better storage, easier to recycle) but I’m still a fan of bringing back the completely reusable glass bottles used before the aluminum cans.

  • Charlene

I think this is a great, eco friendly design that I’d definitely buy. I don’t see how it’s “ugly” or physically impossible so I don’t see why Coke wouldn’t do this. Get with the go green times Coke!

Great concept, I hope they start manufacturing these!
