British designer Karen Ryan was invited by Balloon Contemporary in Chicago and commissioned to create a collection of “Custom Made” chairs from discarded chairs and other scraps. Inspired by American culture and childhood narratives and the Adventures of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin, she came up with a series of chairs that mixed cultural paraphernalia.

After spending 2 years collecting discarded chairs from friends and the streets of London, designer Martino Gamper spent 100 days creating 100 new chair designs. “My intention is to investigate the potential for creating useful new designs by blending together stylistic or structural elements of existing chair types.”

Made from 10,000 drinking straws, the Clutch Chair, by Scott Jarvie, is an exploratory research piece that passes comment on our disposable culture.
This piece was selected by Zaha Hadid as her Curators Choice at Noise Festival 2008 .

The Clutch Project began as a microscopic observation of the structural composition of trees and the directional properties of Capillary tubes (xylem)
