Song of the Day : [2/5]

Surf City : Mt. Kill

surf-city-ep

On their debut EP, Surf City find a perfect blend between the sounds of warm 1960′s California pop and raw, angry punk. The New Zealand foursome has been making a name for themselves on their home turf but they’ve yet to break through anywhere outside of that. Their songs are full of distortion and hazey/pretty melodies, tender emotions and anger.  The video for ‘Dickshaker’s Union‘ features the band jamming in a cramped garage and a cuddly bear pogo-sticking in slow motion in front of bright, blue skies, which I reckon is an apt fit for the band. And if the album artwork looks familiar, its because its by the “Assembly-Line Picasso” Steve Keene, who has also done album covers for Pavement and the Silver Jews.
