The dark days were through with Bobby Hebb’s love-a-thon, one of the most soul-driven songs ever written and loved. “Sunny” is a transformation of love itself now topped with a modern cherry by Swiss producer, Mercury. Doubtful was any fan of this heartful Motown hit that the sun could shine brighter, but those quick, tribal drums give Read the full story

No one can stop a “Duke of Earl.” As an R&B predecessor and major stylistic influence, Gene Chandler is remembered fondly for this hit song. A darling among all the solid gold oldies, the dumbed-down background doo-wops made for a catchy classic. The soulful chart-topper was his big break and led him into 19 singles on the top 40 list.

It is a summer love anthem to it’s core and what needs to be brought back from the early 1960′s, when poodle skirts had just lost their appeal, but pleasant harmonies remained in high demand–thank, goodness. Chandler ruled as Duke, wearing a monocle, cape, top hat, and cane to each performance. The talent, not the attire, is what won him the “Producer of the Year” Award for the National Association of TV and Radio in 1970, beating even famed producer of the Temptations.

Let him seize your sound system for the summer. The Duke rules again.

The Generationals : When They Fight, They Fight

It’s no wonder why when I first heard ‘When They Fight, They Fight’ by the Generationals I was perplexed as to what “generation” they were from.  I was amazed to find that this duo made up of guitarists/songwriters, Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer was in fact not from the 50’s or the 60’s as I expected but rather a modern ensemble. With a sound that very much resembles that of ‘the oldies’, this hit, off their album Con Law (released July 2009), takes you back to the Motown. The pop lyrics tell a story that is about fighting with the one you love, and loving the one you fight unconditionally.  I must say, I’m a sucker for a good love song but this one deserves definite praise. The New Orleans based Joyner and Widmer take us back to a time when music was all about having soul and telling your love story and they do it with a sense of fluency.

The Cramps: Goo Goo Muck

lux-interior-the-cramps

Who doesn’t love a little rockabilly music? The Cramps became popular in NYC in the 70′s. Their music is experimental and psychedelic. It also has some 60′s punk elements in it. All in all, pretty groovy stuff. Listen to Goo Goo Muck below, and also check out their version of “Lonesome Town” if you want some more goody-goodness…
